Cade Otton Delivers Peak 2025 Performance in Buccaneers' Narrow Victory Over Panthers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Cade Otton produced his strongest output of the 2025 season during Saturday's rain-drenched 16-14 win against NFC South rival Carolina Panthers, catching seven passes on nine targets for 94 yards and a touchdown. The effort preserved Tampa Bay's postseason chances at a critical moment. Such reliability under duress highlighted Otton's growth into a dependable target for quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Thriving Amid Inclement Weather

Rain limited deep throws early, forcing shorter, precise connections. Otton opened scoring five minutes in with an 18-yard touchdown, powering through a safety after Mayfield's seam pass. His 6-foot-5 frame and physical style proved ideal for wet conditions, where footing falters and passes must stick. Head Coach Todd Bowles noted, "He did a great job. With the conditions, it was that type of game; you really couldn't get it outside much—in the first half especially, it rained continuously. He did a heck of a job on the boots and made some key catches for us. He did a good job."

Key Sequences Seal the Outcome

Otton contributed repeatedly. A scrambling Mayfield hit him for 22 yards near halftime, setting up a 13-7 advantage via field goal. Later, he drew a 13-yard pass interference penalty on another drive. Crucially, on third-and-4 late from their 35-yard line, Otton snared a flat pass off play-action, weaving 16 yards for a first down. This clock management led to a punt pinning Carolina at its 3-yard line with under 20 seconds left, securing the win.

Season-Long Development Pays Off

The performance marked Otton's second-highest yardage total ever, trailing only his 100-yard outing versus Baltimore in 2024. A University of Washington alumnus in his fourth NFL year, he ended 2025 with 59 receptions—matching his prior high—for 572 yards and one touchdown. "Each and every week, I try to be ready when the ball comes my way, and if it doesn't, I just do my job in other places," Otton said. "This game I ended up with some more production in the pass game but I'm just really happy to get the win." Tight ends like Otton offer versatility, blending receiving with blocking to stabilize offenses in adverse scenarios, underscoring their rising value in high-pressure situations.
